NOAH LAUNCHES SYLLABUS FOR ANIMAL HEALTH SALES STAFF EXAM
The National Office of Animal Health has launched a new syllabus for its examination aimed at sales staff in the animal health industry.
The NOAH Certificate of Animal Health (NCAH) is designed to give candidates a thorough grounding in animal physiology, animal disease and treatment options, as well as giving them a full knowledge of the legal framework in which medicines are regulated, advertised and sold.
Donal Murphy, NOAH’s Technical Executive, said the NCAH is playing an important part in ensuring the responsible use and promotion of animal medicines in the UK.
“The NCAH will ensure that people working in the animal health industry, whatever their previous training or professional background, will have the right level of knowledge to sell medicines safely and within the law,” he said.
“The course covers topics, such as the legislation surrounding animal medicines and a basic knowledge of animal diseases, which are essential to bring candidates up to the right level of knowledge to effectively do their jobs.
“One of the strong points of the new syllabus is that, after a general foundation level, it offers specific more advanced modules that are particularly relevant to the candidate, and allows them to focus on specific areas, for example companion animals or farm animals,” he said.
The NCAH evolved from the Marketing Authorisation Holders (MAH) certificate administered by AMTRA (Animal Medicines Training Regulatory Authority). It came under NOAH’s remit at the beginning of 2011 to avoid confusion with AMTRA’s Suitably Qualified Persons (SQP) qualification. The qualification continues to be accredited by Harper Adams University College under its jurisdiction as an institution with its own degree awarding powers.
“The ability of sales staff to discuss the products they are promoting, in line with the VMD’s (Veterinary Medicine Directorate) legally approved Summary of Product Characteristics, is a crucial part of doing the job properly,” said Mr Murphy.
Training Courses and Events
AMTRA and AHDA Regional CPD events, February-March 2012
The events are broken down into afternoon and evening events depending upon the venue, please see below for further details.
SQPs may attend either or both. The afternoon session is worth 16 CPD points and the evening session 20 points.
Programme
AFTERNOON: language of value and reassurance
Part of your role is to present the very best solutions for customers. Sometimes this is straightforward and the customer leaves with what they asked for.
Sometimes what the customer asks for is NOT the best option or maybe they haven't thought about the longer term solutions. Either way, it's up to you to present the solutions in the right way using 'language of value and reassurance'.
Words are powerful. The use of a single word can provoke a positive or negative emotional response so your choice of words is key.
It will look at the role YOU play in the 'buying decision' process and share ideas on best practice customer interaction skills.
It will focus on:
- The 'buying decision' and how to help customers to consider different options.
- Identifying opportunities to help customers to solve problems now and in the future.
- Educating customers and helping them to stay open and interested.
- How to say 'no': avoiding words that don't work and using words that do.
- Presenting benefits, helping customers to understand value and reassuring them.
By developing these skills, the customer interactions you have will be even more productive, customer relationships will be stronger and business will grow.
AFTERNOON: companion animal health
Bayer Animal Health will bring a session on internal and external parasites in companion animals including rabbits, plus information about Advantage, their product new to the NFA-VPS sector in 2011.
EVENING: farm animal parasite control
The evening session will start with an update from a local vet on the latest SCOPS guidance on anthelmintic resistance. SCOPS is something we all hear about regularly, but are you sure you fully understand the latest advice and are using it in advising your farmers?
That will be followed by a Pfizer presentation on their new POM-V multi-active wormer Startect. It's not available to SQPs at the moment, but it's important that you understand how it fits in to good parasite control strategies.
