Proenergy – winter feeding ewes

Zintec’s Proenergy bucket is a 20% protein, (soya) mineral, trace element and vitamin bucket lick that can be fed to ewes throughout the lambing period. In a six-week trial, two groups of Beulah ewes carrying twins were fed either Proenergy or another feed block. Both performed well but although the blocks were nearly half the price of the Proenergy buckets they cost an extra £2.27/ewe. The quality protein source in Proenergy means animals need less protein, and, when combined with forage the fibre helps the rumen work more effectively, and with high levels of trace elements and vitamins, Proenergy provides the ultimate package.

Managing milk fever

Bovikalc® calcium boluses, manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim, can be used in dairy cows to reduce the risk of milk fever. Each bolus provides 42g of calcium which helps to raise blood calcium levels quickly and provide a sustained supply of calcium to overcome any shortfall at a time of significantly increased demand by the cow. Bovikalc® also provides an acidifying effect, which helps the cow mobilise her own calcium reserves.

Given around the time of calving, Bovikalc® boluses help to reduce the risk of milk fever. Following successful treatment of a clinical case, Bovikalc® can also be given to reduce the risk of recurrence.

Zermex – new choice in worming

The wormer Zermex 0.5% Pour-On for Cattle has been authorised for use in adult dairy cows. It is recommended to be used in the management routine for pre-calving cows, for example when moved into the close to calving or transition cow group, a few weeks pre-calving. Used in this way, there is no loss of milk from the six-day withdrawal time and the response to treatment is maximised. Dosage is 1ml per 10kg bodyweight.
